Film Screening at Liberty Hall
Lawrence Fair Trade will screen the documentary The Price of Sugar at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St, on April 13, 2010. Doors open at 6:45 pm and the movie begins at 7:00 pm to be followed by a discussion.
The Price of Sugar takes place on the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic, where tourists flock to pristine beaches with little knowledge that a few miles away thousands of dispossessed Haitians are under armed guard on plantations harvesting sugarcane, most of which will end up in US kitchens. Cutting cane by machete, they work 14 hour days, 7 days a week, frequently without access to decent housing, electricity, clean water, education, healthcare or adequate nutrition. The documentary follows a charismatic Spanish priest, Father Christopher Hartley, as he organizes some of this hemisphere's poorest people, challenging the powerful interests profiting from their work. This film raises key questions about where the products we consume originate, at what human cost they are produced and ultimately, where our responsibility lies.
Meeting notes 2/25/10
Below are the notes from 2/25/10, I hope to see you all next Wed, 5pm.
1. Grant: Hadley will compile a list of possible grants we can apply
for and their deadlines for next weeks meeting. She will also arrange
getting together with Shannon to register the ECM for the grant we
discussed applying for last semester. Hadley, please let us know if you
need any help.
2. Oread coffee - Brady has offered to try to contact someone with the Oread to look into presenting Fair Trade coffee to them
3. Pulse Fair Trade Training - Offer free training for pulse employees
on the basics of Fair Trade coffee so they can share with customers,
perhaps funding some sort of "Ask me about Fair Trade button" and
certificate or some sort for the training. I think this idea could
easily be offered to all coffee shops that carry Fair Trade and is a
great way to get people talking. This would also be a selling point we
could when asking orgs such as the Oread to carry FT blends.
4. Film screening at Liberty:
We are looking into screening "The Price of Sugar" which looks at the
sugar trade industry in Haiti. As Haiti is currently forefront in
peoples minds we decided to push and try to have the screening within
the next 4-5 weeks.
The cost for the film with screening rights is $175.
Alicia will contact Films for Action and Liberty about cost for screening (and available dates)
Meredith and Sarah will contact the library to see if we can get a free copy to prescreen
Sarah will put together a mock up of a "Where can I buy Fair Trade?"
list for next weeks meeting. We will also need to determine how to
explain and show the difference between Fair Trade certified vs direct
trade. Do we want to include the % of FT offerings (I think this would
be most relevant with the coffee shops, so that people are not under
the impression that a shop that carries one or two FT blends has all
FT)?
Sarah will put together a short presentation to request funds present a
rough draft at next weeks meeting. This will be used to request
donations from the Merc, but could also be extended to other business.
We are asking for donations to offset the cost of hosting the movie,
hold a concurrent bake sale. The funds raised will be used to host
other Fair Trade activities and possibly fund a few people traveling to
the Fair Trade Futures conference in Boston in Sept. At this point
Alicia, Brady, Sarah, and Hadley have expressed interest in going.
Please let us know if you are interested. Plane tickets will be
approximately $500 a piece and registration before 3/31 is
significantly discounted.
We will contact the following clubs to co-sponsor / advertise the event, please add any you think might be relevant!
* Latin American Studies & Solidarity Club - Alicia
* HAYLO - Sarah
* African studies - Alicia
* French club - Hadley
* UMKC Afro Caribbean - Sarah
Could someone please look through Haskell, UMKC, Washburn and KSU club list and get contact info for any others
Again, we are looking to hold the screening within a short
time-frame, so please be prepared for the next meeting. This will be a
great opportunity to reach out to the community!
5. Have a presentation or discussion with some of the coffee shops that
do direct trade vs Fair Trade certification with the group.
6. Hadley suggested we meet at coffee shops, both to offer them
business and to increase our presence around town. Any suggestions or
opinions? Would people like to meet at a coffee shop for next weeks
meeting?
Thanks, hope to see everyone on Wed, but even if you can't make the
meetings we would love your participation in any way you are able.
Annual Fair Trade Holiday Market
Fair Trade Holiday Market
Market offers fairly traded arts and crafts from local and international artisans that make unique holiday gifts while also helping artisans in need.
What: Lawrence’s annual Fair Trade Holiday Market
When: 11/27 and 11/28 from 8am to 7pm
11/29 to 12/3 from 10am to 7pm
Where: ECM (Ecumenical Christian Ministries)
1204 Oread Ave, Lawrence, KS
Who: The market is organized by Lawrence Fair Trade, a community group dedicated to raising awareness of global economic injustice and working to establish sustainable solutions.
(Lawrence, KS)— Lawrence’s annual Fair Trade Holiday Market has been a favorite place for local residents to find unique holiday gifts for loved ones that also help support disadvantaged artisans here and around the world.
The Fair Trade Holiday Market will feature fairly traded handcrafts, apparel, chocolate, dry goods and much more.
Vendors at the sale this year include Equal Exchange, A Greater Gift, Ten Thousand Villages, Women’s Bean Project and local businesses such as Two Hands Worldshop and First Weavers. Donations can be given in a person’s name as an alternative gift to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and Heifer Project, who will be selling holiday cards.
The high quality crafts, textiles and clothing sold at the sale are handmade by artisans from 35 countries around the world, including underprivileged parts of the U.S. Fair Trade is an alternative to conventional trade that takes measures to ensure products are produced in safe and healthy working conditions and that artisans maintain control of their businesses through cooperatives. Artisan cooperatives often choose to devote a large percentage of their profits to community development projects including schools, hospitals and other important infrastructure. Fair Trade also takes steps to establish sustainable methods of production. This innovative triple bottom line approach respects People, Planet and Profit as opposed to conventional trade where profit alone rules but often fails to provide incentive to respect the people producing goods and the planet providing the resources.
This year Lawrence Fair Trade will be hosting several fun events and educational activities in conjunction with the market.
On Friday and Saturday November 27th and 28th from 10am to 4pm on the main level of the ECM visitors to the market will find chair massages and freshly baked chapatti and crepes which can be had for small donations to benefit Comfort the Children International.
Also on Friday and Saturday, November 27th and 28th from 10am to 4pm Lawrence Fair Trade will be sponsoring a Kids Corner on the main level of the ECM. The Kids Corner will be staffed with several responsible adults who will guide kids through fun arts and crafts activities. Parents are then free to shop at the market upstairs.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, December 1st and 2nd from 5:15 to 7:00 pm Lawrence Fair Trade will be hosting a screening of films about international trade and the Fair Trade movement.

Attention all vendors: Sales Tax Clarification
Hello and thank you for participating in the 2009 Fair Trade Holiday Market at the ECM.
Our apologies if there has been any confusion regarding sales tax charges. We will attempt to clarify our procedures, please let me know if you still have questions.
For all vendors required to pay sales tax, we are asking that you mark-up your items by 17.85%, 10% will be kept to help facilitate the sale, the 7.85% will be returned to you with your total sales. The reason each price tag needs the mark up is that prices charged at the register are the exact price shown on the price tag. Once you receive your total sales plus the 7.85% back, you may submit the 7.85% along with your regular sales tax payment. More information about sales tax can be found here: http://www.ksrevenue.org/bustaxtypessales.htm.
We are unable to add sales tax at the register, as included in our great variety are some organizations that the sales tax does not apply to (such as accepting donations). Unfortunately our limited system does not allow us to create different tax rules for different vendors.
Also, just as a friendly reminder, please ensure your price tags also have your unique code which corresponds with your inventory list. If possible, please include the two letter prefix which identifies your business (for example, Two Hands = TH) on the price tag before the product code.
Please let me know if you have any questions, or if there is anything else I can help with.
Thank you so much for your participation!
